Never thought a few days off could be so tiring

After being off since last Monday I was excited to get back to work today.  My husband's 14 year old daughter visited us from New Brunswick, Canada for her first American Thanksgiving.  Dave created a jammed pack itinerary of activities that tired us all out.  I was so excited to have a relaxing day at work. ;-)

It started Tuesday with painting pottery and bowling.  Wednesday was a visit to this new-ish area in Maryland called National Harbor.  We walked around (it's like a town center), had lunch and then went to the ICE! show, a huge indoor arena filled with over millions of pounds of ice sculptures.  It was very cool- literally (it was nine degrees!) and figuratively.  Thankfully the ice skating rink at the Sculpture Garden was closed for technical difficulties.  :-)  Thursday was the big turkey day.  Lauren got to meet my husband's step-brothers, their wives and children for the first time, which I think was a bit overwhelming.  Friday I got her up bright and early at 5:00 a.m. to hit some stores for Black Friday.  I think this was a highlight of her trip since Canadians miss out on this once a year phenomenon.  Friday afternoon we were off to Dave and Busters for some games and a chance to visit with my mom, sister and her fiance.  And Saturday we packed her up and shipped her back to Canada.  What a LONG weekend.  Dave and I each took a nap for several hours Saturday afternoon. :-)

I took tons of pictures but since I don't want to bore you I tried to pick just a few highlights.

Bowling- this was the first time Lauren did 'real' bowling.  In her province they only have what I think they call candlepin, which is tiny pins and a little ball.  After about 10 gutter balls in a row she decided that their bowling is much better.

ICE!  Tons of fun.  If you have this show in your town you definitely should go.  And as a bonus you'll get to wear one of the stylish blue parkas, which will keep your bum dry on the ice slide.

Black Friday- Target was a nightmare (the line to check out at 6:15 went around the perimeter of the store twice) so we decided to try Best Buy.  We never made it inside as the line to enter the store had at least 100 people.

Dave and Busters (my sister gloating over how many tickets she won) and goofy pictures in the mall.

The aftermath- Hubby and Preppy Puppy (in his fave pink and green sweater) taking a much needed rest Saturday afternoon.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  And thank you for reading my little blog.  I appreciate you all!

Whitney's Wednesday Wares

Quick post today because I'm heading out the door to meet my husband and stepdaughter to go ice skating. Wish me luck- I hate ice skating!  I'll post more about how I did and the other fun stuff we've been doing this weekend.

My stepdaughter is visiting from Canada, Fredericton, New Brunswick to be exact, and she was dying to go to our mall since theirs is pretty small.  She loves Urban Outfitters so that was our first stop.  I haven't been to this store since I was in college and now I see why.  It was super clear to me that I am about as far from trendy as you can get. ;-)  But I was able to find this diamond in the rough.  It's a really pretty shade of gray and the wool is very soft.  My mother laughs that I buy anything that has a bow and I am pleased to report I did not disappoint her this afternoon.

Now that it's getting colder in Virginia I've had to break out the Preppy Puppy's jackets and sweaters.  Yes I am the crazy lady who dresses up her dog.  Please, did you expect anything less.  Spencer has several coats but he's been wearing this one by Lands' End the last few days since it's been cold and rainy.  It's waterproof and has a warm fleece lining.  Spencer's is an older version that even has a light that blinks so that we're visible at night.  Another great thing about this coat is that they have a wide range of sizes and their XL will fit large dogs such as a golden retriever.

Another Etsy find

Searching for some ornaments last week on Etsy, I came across Over the Edge Ornaments.  Shop owner Jeno hand paints glass ornaments with just about anything you can think of.  I ordered two- one for my cousin, her husband and their new baby and one for my little family.  I sent Jeno a few pictures and told her a little about all of us.  I love them!

The Preppy Puppy and Kitties

I've not participated in Kelly's Korner "show us your life series" but when I saw this week's theme was pets I couldn't resist.  I loved doing this post as it was a quick trip down memory lane for me.  Sorry it's not as quick of a read for you.  I love my furry children so much it was hard not to gush.

So as not to offend anyone, the boys are presented in order of age. ;-)

Devin, aka Biggie Smalls, Muchkin, Dev-Dev, Devy and the Big D

Devin was the first pet I could call my own.  I grew up with dogs (cockers to be exact) but they were all family pets with an affinity for my mom.  A couple of years after college I decided to check off yet another milestone of being a 'real adult' and get a pet.  I lived alone in Richmond and traveled a lot for work and knew a dog would be out of the question.  And since Mother deprived my sister, Big Daddy and me of a feline friend (she hates them) I decided my first pet would be a cat.  I went to the Richmond SPCA with the intent of getting a little kitten but decided against that after I realized just how spunky eight week kittens are.  Plus as soon as I saw Devin across the cat room I knew he had to be mine.  He was four months old and the cutest animal I had ever seen.  One of the volunteers took him out of the crate and suggested I brush him.  As soon as I had him in my arms he started purring and I knew he had to be mine.  That was also the first and last time he let me brush him.

Devin has been with me through thick and thin and always knows how to cheer me up.  I am so glad Big Daddy got to meet Devin.  He loved cats and thought the world of Devy.  The week before Big Daddy died in 2000, I went home to visit him and brought Devin so I could sneak him in to the hospital to see Big Daddy.  They both loved the cuddle time but something spooked Devin and he jumped down from the bed.  I was frantic because after searching the floor Devin was nowhere in sight.  After 20 minutes Mother said I'd have to alert the nurses that I lost my cat.  In a hospital.  Yea, that would go over well.  As I was getting up to alert the masses I heard a tiny noise from under the empty bed in the room.  There was Devin.  On a little shelf under the bed.  I have never been so happy and yet so angry to see him.  I better stop telling Devin stories or I'll lose all of you.  If I haven't already. ;-)

Angus, aka Angy, Pooh-Bear, Gus and El Gato Negro

Oh, Angy.  He's my special little guy.  And I mean special in many ways.  He's a love bug (when he wants to be) but he also has maaannnny neurosises.  So we call him 'special'.  I got Angus as a present for then-boyfriend Dave in 2003.  We had moved in together a few months before and Dave had said a few times that it would be great to have another cat.  He grew up with cats and never had less than two at a time.  I started looking for a kitten in January but quickly found it wasn't 'kitten season'.  Whatever that is.  After just about giving up I saw an ad in the Post for a rescue organization in the area that was looking for a home for a four month old black cat.  I called right away and was soon in the car going to meet the little guy.  Angus was a VERY lucky foster kitty.  He was living with a family in Avanel, an exclusive neighborhood in the area.  The foster mom told me that Angus was scared of her other cats so she was keeping him in her master bathroom.  Holy bathroom, Batman.  Angus was living the lap of luxury not in a bathroom, but more of a bath suite.  It was made up of four separate rooms and was easily bigger than the 1,100 square foot condo I was about to take him home to.  Angy was very shy but after an hour he warmed up to me and off he went to our home in McLean.

Dave and Angus bonded right away.  Not so much for Devin and Angus.  It took many months before they warmed up to each other but they never became the best friends I'd hope they would be.  But I do catch them snuggling together from time to time. ;-)  Angus has had his unsolvable health problems through the years but we love him tons.  Even after having to medicate him with Prozac, paying Texas A&M $2,000 to do some special test on him and watching him go from a tiny kitty to a large cat back to a tiny cat and now to a HUGE cat.  He got really sick right before we moved from the condo to our house but after all the tests, none of the vets were able to reach a diagnosis.  He got better a few weeks after settling in to the house and in the last six months he's become my shadow, which is quite a change since he was always a daddy's boy.  Oh, Angy.  We love you.

Spencer, aka The Spencester, Spencey, Little Lamb, Monkey and Wiggles

When Dave and I were engaged we were out to dinner with several couple friends of ours, most of whom just got married.  One of my friends asked me what I was going to ask Dave for as my wedding gift.  I told the table that I'd always wanted a CKCS and I would love Dave forever if a Cavalier puppy with a red bow was on the doorstep.  Fast forward to about five weeks before our wedding.  Dave told me he would be gone much of Saturday because he was going to play two rounds of golf with a friend of his in Richmond.  I didn't think much of it because I had tons of wedding stuff to do and it would be nice to have him out of the way.  Fast forward to eight that night.  Dave and his friend called me from the street and said Dave hurt his back and could I come outside to get his clubs because he couldn't carry them.  As I walked up to the car I only saw his friend in the drivers seat. At that moment Dave opened the back door and was holding a Cavalier puppy with a bow around his neck.  I almost fainted!

That night changed my life forever.  Spencer opened up a whole new world for me.  Through him I have made new friends across the country through our clubs, met so many Cavalier people (who are the best dog parents!), was introduced to the world of dog accessories (I have a bit of an obsession with buying harnesses and leashes), learned so many things about Cavalier health concerns, and learned that I can never live without a Cavalier.  Thank you, Dave, for bringing Spencey and me together.

Whitney's Wednesday Wares

Hello!  For this week's goodies I thought I'd highlight some things from Etsy.  Don't you just love Etsy?  I have an obsession with it.  I could seriously search for things for hours.  And sometimes I do. ;-)  When packages come to the house now my husband has started asking if it's from a regular store or the crafty site.  He's so silly!

For all the shutterbugs out there I highly recommend August Blossoms fabric camera straps.  Denise completely customized my strap to be a little narrower than her standard (mine is the photo below) and she was totally open to suggestions from me.  It looks like she has more new fabrics and I'm trying hard to resist ordering another.

The Preppy Puppy proudly advertises he's a mama's boy by wearing this sterling silver tag from Urban Puppy.  His name and our phone number are stamped on the back.

I know what's going on Spencer's Christmas list this year...

The cats have been a bit upset about me leaving them off the blog.  They love their catnip toys and all three of us recommend the Krafty Kate's Kreations crocheted toys.  They are all handmade and filled with organic catnip she grows herself.  They love their elephant and spider- two of Mommy's favorite things. ;-)

And how about a set of birds for all the Twitter Kitties out there.

I've not yet purchased from CatzillaCrafts but how cute is the pie?!  And the donuts, too!  I better not show Devin and Angus this site or they'll demand one of everything.

P.S. Here are my other boys.  Angus is on the left and Devin on the right.  Devin and I just had our 10 year cat-iversary last Friday.  I can't believe I've had him for 10 years!

Happy Etsy Shopping!

I cooked more tonight than I did all last month

Well, not quite.  But it was pretty close.  Not only did I cook dinner (something I didn't do at all last week) but I also baked.  I texted my mom to tell her and she said she didn't believe me.  But I really did!

I have a Thanksgiving potluck at work on Friday and since I'm not very saavy in the kitchen I thought it was best to do a test run before bringing my treat to the office.   I usually buy something pretty and delicious from Pastries by Randolph or  Mother's Macaroons but thought I should try something homemade since I'm doing Weight Watchers.  I made cranberry pumpkin bars but altered the recipe a little and used more pumpkin spice and cranberries.  The consistency is a little different than I thought it would be but they taste yummy.  So I'm declaring these a success and will be baking again Thursday night.

Cranberry-Pumpkin Bars

Ingredients

1 cup(s) packed light brown sugar
4 Tbsp reduced-calorie margarine, soft, at room teperature
1 cup(s) canned pumpkin, puree
1 large egg(s)
1 large egg white(s)
1/3 cup(s) buttermilk
1 1/4 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cup(s) uncooked old fashioned oats
1 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp table salt
2/3 cup(s) dried cranberries

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Lightly coat a 9x13-inch (23x33 cm) baking pan with cooking spray, then dust lightly with flour.

  • In a large bowl, cream sugar and margarine with an electric mixer; beat in egg, egg white, pumpkin purée and buttermilk.

  • In medium bowl, combine flour, oats, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda and salt. Stir into pumpkin mixture just until moistened, then add cranberries and mix gently.

  • Spread batter in pan and bake 20 to 25 minutes or until center springs back when gently pressed. Cool and cut into 18 bars.

While the bars were in the oven I made a delicious recipe I saw on KAG's fantastic blog last week- rigatoni with sauteed eggplant and tomatoes.  I altered this one a bit also and used whole wheat penne and also added asparagus and shrimp.  And I also did fresh basil instead of mint.  It was delicious.  Thanks, KAG!

Rigatoni with Sautéed Eggplant and Tomatoes

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces (5 1/2 cups) rigatoni
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium eggplant, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • kosher salt and pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint, torn
  • 1/2 cup grated ricotta salata or Parmesan

Directions

  1. Cook the rigatoni according to the package directions.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the eggplant, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 8 minutes. Add the garlic and tomatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes begin to soften, 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Add the drained rigatoni and mint and toss. Divide among individual bowls and top with the ricotta salata or Parmesan.

Thank you, veterans!

My grandfather, Hop, was a WWII veteran.  He was in his second year at Johns Hopkins and newly married to my grandmother, Annie, when he was called to active duty.  He had such fond memories of his time in the Army.  While war was awful, he made friendships with men that he kept in touch with for decades to come.  He was also able to travel to the globe unlike most 19 year olds in that time could.  Hop loved to travel and named several horses after places was during the war- Remagen's Bridge, Bast-O-Gone, and Little Clipper.  We also had a horse named after one of the best known songs of the era- Boogiewoogybuglboy (Thoroughbred names can't be longer than 18 letters).

Hop and Annie, July 1945, Washington, DC
Hop was home from Europe for 30 days and he and Annie took a trip to Washington from their home in Roanoke, Virginia.

I heart HomeGoods

HomeGoods, you've come through for me again, just like an old friend.  After searching high and low for a country/shabby chic-ish/not too modern TV console, I found just what I was looking for at Home Goods.  And the reason I went to HG wasn't for a console but rather a lamp (still looking, sigh).  As I was walking back to the lamps I saw this devine, sage green console.  It's perfect!  There are shelves on either side so that I can store the books and things that were on the bookshelf I no longer wanted.  And best of all, it was only $300!

And even better than finding the console was the new TV we bought yesterday to put on it.  We've finally entered the 21st century and are now the proud owners of a 42" LG LED TV.  It's devine.

But the best part of all was finding homes for the three things I wanted to throw away.  As Dave and I were putting the trash on the sidewalk to be hauled away later this week, a young guy across the street was eyeing up the old television.  Dave told him it still worked and that he was welcome to it.  He took the TV and the bookshelf.  And when I went outside this morning to walk Spencer I saw that the ugly old TV stand was gone.  So not only did I get new things, so did someone else. :-)

Shabby chic? More like shabby CHEAP!

We have a really small family room so to de-clutter the space I've been looking for a larger TV stand/console/sideboard.  I need it to have several drawers and shelves so that I can get rid of the bookshelf we have and free up some space.  I've checked the usual suspects but since I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for (white, distressed, with cabinets and drawers) I turned to Craig's List to see what goodies are out there.

I figured 'shabby' chic' would give me some good results.  Instead, this is some of what I got back.  Seriously, you call this shabby chic?  It's more like shabby CHEAP to me.

What is the creppy colored thing on top?!

This looks like it's meant for the trash, not sale.

I guess this might look okay in a little girls room.

Oh well.  Guess I need to take another look at Pottery Barn. ;-)

It's a SWEEP!

Congratulations McBollinelli!  I am proud to be an elephant in Virginia tonight.

The airport

I'm in Charlotte today for a meeting that was shorter than I anticipated.  Since I booked a later flight I have the pleasure of sitting in one of their ubiquitous white rockers people watching.  You see THE most interesting people at airports.  So far I've seen a mother pushing a stroller with triplets (so cute!); a bunch of angry business men; a young couple who must be leaving for their honeymoon the way they've been smooching; and what has to be a motorcycle group (they look the guys in Sons of Anarchy). :-)  I have a pretty good vantage point but the little carts that ferry people between the terminals keeps driving by and the beeping is driving me crazy.  Maybe it's time to try out the wine bar I'm sitting across from.  One hour down, only three more to go.

Edited at 4:28 to add: Yikes!  Two ambulance carts just whizzed by.  Hope whomever they were going to collect is okay.  BTW, the paramedics were cute. ;-)

Edited again at 4:42: The cute paramedics just whizzed by again.  They had an elderly lady that has definitely seen better days.  I hope she's okay.
